A MAN was slammed by This Morning viewers after it emerged that he had given his colleague a live dog as a secret Santa present.
Speaking on This Morning today, a spokeswoman for Dogs Trust told the story of how the 20-week-old puppy, named Elf, had been given as an unwanted present.
A man described by viewers as an “idiot” had given the Cocker Spaniel as a gift on the day of his office Christmas party.
The overwhelmed man who was given the live present had then handed it to the animal charity, who thankfully helped to find Elf a new home.
Dogs Trust spokeswoman Maria explained: “Unbelievably, we had a call a couple of weeks ago from an owner who had been to their Christmas party and opened their secret Santa gift to find a small Spaniel puppy.
“As gorgeous as he is, the owner thought about it overnight and gave us a ring.”
But viewers – and hosts Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby – weren’t impressed with the “moronic” gift, which proves dogs aren’t just for Christmas.
Schofe said: “It was obviously a very thoughtful person who was giving what they thought was a lovely gift… what a thick thing to do.”
Viewers at home were equally furious, with one tweeting: “What type of irresponsible idiot gives a puppy as a Secret Santa? They should be prosecuted for cruelty.”
Others described the man as a “cretin”, while one asked: “What was the giver of the Secret Santa thinking giving a puppy as a gift?!”

As part of the heartbreaking segment, Maria revealed the other reasons why people had been forced to abandon the dogs they had been given for Christmas.
Among the most shocking reasons were that the dog “didn’t match the furniture” and “my puppy distracts the kids.”
Another owner had handed in their pet because it was scared of aluminium foil, and one clown had given their dog up because it kept sitting in front of the TV.
Summing up the viewers’ reactions, one fan tweeted: “What sort of heartless idiot gives up a dog because it ‘doesn’t match the furniture’? Completely soulless.”

At first, Elf struggled to adapt to life at a shelter, but the pup has now been adopted – spending his first night in his new home yesterday.
Dogs Trust said that anyone struggling to care for a dog should always come forward, no matter the reason why they want to give it up.
