These sweet little biscuits are the ideal way to say “I Love You” to your puppy or dog this Valentine’s Day. One of the best features of these biscuits is that they are made with all natural food colouring from the beet powder to give them their precious pink colour. This means you do not have to worry about feeding your furry little loved one unnatural food dyes or colourings.
Your dog will actually enjoy the flavour of these treats more because of the natural food colouring you are adding. The beet powder also adds a little extra sweetness your dog will love. This is much easier for your dog’s system to handle because the sugars are naturally occurring rather than refined sugars that we pull from sugar cane and other sourced to make the white sugar we use every day.
By using soy flour in this recipe rather than wheat flour, you are creating a dog treat that is good even for dogs with wheat allergies. The low gluten in this recipe will mean you will deal with less gas seeing as gluten can cause gastrointestinal problems for many of the dogs who ingest them.
The peanut butter you are using should be organic. If at all possible, you might want to think about grinding your own. It is a lot easier than you might think. Just take a bunch of peanuts and start grinding them in a food processor. Start with a chop setting and increase the speed and duration of the blade until the peanuts have been transformed into a paste. Make sure you are only doing this if you want to make a few cups of peanut butter because otherwise the blades will not get through everything properly to create the peanut butter you can use.
In a large bowl combine the soy flour and baking powder. In a separate bowl combine the water and the beet powder. Add the water mixture and the peanut butter to the bowl of dry ingredients. Mix all of these ingredients together until they form soft dough. If the dough is too dry gradually add more water and mix until a soft dough forms. Take the dough and wrap it cling wrap then place it in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Lightly flour a rolling pin and flat surface to be used to roll out the dough. Remove the dough from the refrigerator and roll it out until it is a 14; inch thick. Tale a small heart shaped biscuit cutter and cut out hearts from the rolled dough. Place the hearts onto a baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes. Let the biscuits cool completely before removing them from the baking sheet. These biscuits will last for 2 weeks in an airtight container at room temperature.
