For some pet owners, a dog or a cat holds almost as much prestige as a child in their home.
So, it should be no surprise to see some of WA’s most popular baby names being used for pets too.
Forget Fido and Felix, today Australians are more likely to call their cat Bella or George and their dog Charlie or Poppy.
A list of the country’s top 10 most popular pet names has been released by Pet Insurance Australia, which takes the information from 150,000 insured animals.
Twilight-inspired Bella and Charlie are the top names for pooches, followed by Luna, Ruby, Molly and Coco for females and Max, Archie, Buddy and Ollie for males.
Of the top 10 most popular dog names, six dog names and four bitch names, also appeared in the State Government’s most recent top 50 list of the most popular baby names in WA.
Cat owners are also showing a trend towards “people names” for their felines.
While Luna topped the list for females, Bella made another appearance as the second most popular name, while Lilly, Coco and Molly rounded out the top five.
WA’s eighth most popular baby name Charlie was also the most popular name for owners of toms, while Oscar and Max also made an appearance.
Of the most popular cat names, half of the female names were among WA’s most popular baby names and seven tom names were also popular for boys.
Regardless, many pet owners continue to use less conventional names for their furry friends, inspired by Disney and even food. Maleficent, Bambi and Tinkerbell was among some of the most unusual names, as well as Porkchop, Babushka and Moxi which were new this season.
