In 2017, California became the first state to make the monumental decision to ban pet shops from selling animals from puppy mills, instead requiring them to partner with local shelters and rescue organizations to help adopt out animals. A number of cities across the U.S. have also banned the commercial sale of animals from these backyard breeders, and now there is a call for the state of New York to place a similar ban.
So-called “puppy mills” are horrendous environments straight from a horror movie. Stacked in tiny, filthy cages, animals are kept as breeders and forced to live in a constant cycle of pregnancy, rarely, if ever, seeing sunshine or feeling grass beneath their paws. Animals that are deemed to be not profitable are callously discarded like objects, and those that remain at the mills live in misery with their health and well-being ignored. With millions of healthy animals entering shelters each year, and millions being euthanized for lack of space and adopters, there is no sound reason or excuse to buy from pet shops who source their animals from these despicable businesses.
Last year, a New York City pet shop was subject of an investigation by The Humane Society of the United States after animals being sold there were found being physically abused and suffering in poor health with serious infections and painful ailments, leading the shop to shut down. However, unfortunately, this is just one pet shop of many in all of New York who buy their supply of animals from puppy mills and put profit as the top priority.
A petition has been set up on Care2 for the public to have a voice and demand that New York end the commercial sale of dogs and cats from puppy mills. Please take a moment to sign the petition and make your opinion heard.
Public opinion has the great power to ignite serious change, so make sure you share this with your network and ask your friends and family to join you in signing this important petition!
