In 1935 this breed was officially recognized as Cardigan Welsh Corgi by AKC.
Cardigans have a adapting personality and a responsible behavior. They are very alert and little reserve towards new people. Cardigans are large dogs with short legs. They have an athletic and steady body. With proper training they can take commands easily and obey the orders of their owners. Cardigan Welsh Corgi were brought in Wales in 1200 BC. It is all rounder farm dog which was used for multiple purposes in Wales. They protected the homes and the farms of the owners besides doing other tasks. The word Cor gi has been derived and translated as dwarf dog. They were also known as yard long dogs during the ancient times.
Health Issues :
Cardigans do not generally have any serious health issues. The most common death causes among these breed includes old age, neurological disorders and cancer. They may get ill due to certain conditions and may get prone to disease such as progressive retinal atrophy and intervertebral disk disease. It is important to check for symptoms and signs for any such disease. Regular check- up at least once or twice a year is compulsory to prevent any diseases.
Grooming your Cardigan is important to reduce the amount of fur lying here and there in your house. Cardigan sheds a lot all year along and brushing them regularly is the basic requirement of owing a cardigan. Besides brushing their hair their teeth also needs proper and regular brushing to prevent gum diseases and mouth odor. Trim their nails carefully at least once in a month and also clean their ears.
Cardigan Welsh Corgis shed the entire year and twice a year they shed more than normal. Therefore it a must to brush the hair of these breeds regularly especially during the shedding season.
